Reflections II

I know that this is old news, but Oprah Winfrey is a fucking hypocrite. After winning against the cattle industry who alleged that her badmouthing beef put a dent in their profits, she makes all of her employees sign a deal that forces them to shut their mouths about her business and personal life as long as they live. Until the day they die?? I don't think I need to say anything more about how I feel about that bullshit.

But of course this pales in comparison to today's anniversary. On September 11, 2001, some 3000 people died in NYC as a result of terrorist activity. However, on September 11, 1973, some 3000 people died as a result of terrorist activity in Chile. And guess who the culprits were? That's right. The good ol' U.S. of A. Nixon and Kissinger. They systematically and brutally dismantled 150 years of democracy to bring the murderer General Pinochet into power. Why? There are several reasons, but one of the chief reasons was that they could buy the world a Coke. Allegedly, Coca-Cola, Inc. was one of the multinationals that had requested that the U.S. government take action against the Chilean Socialist party.

Why is an American (or Canadian, or a British) life worth more than a Chilean (or Nigerian, or a Mexican) life? How else should we take it when the Chilean president himself attends a 9/11 memorial event at the US embassy instead of organizing and attending one for his own people? What does that say about the US stranglehold on the powers that be in places where they have no business dictating policy? Where US officials can shamelessly state that "people who hate the United States must be controlled, arrested or eliminated".

We should be PISSED. There should be chaos in Washington because of this alone. But that won't happen. We like our Coke, and it doesn't matter what happens down in Chile or wherever. They don't matter. Every time we wear our Reeboks, drink our latt-of-the-day and surf the Internet, someone out there is thinking, "Those fuckers! They live it up while I am here slaving away for a buck a day! And they don't even care if I live or die! When someone tries to treat an American like this, it's a crime, but I DON'T MATTER". It's true, Pablo, you don't even register on my radar screen. That's why things will always be shitty for you, Pablo. Not because of the big bad US government, but because of the greedy, apathetic Americans.

I guess I believe too much in the system. I believe that the reason why things are the way they are in Canada, the US and many other countries is because the people allow it to happen. It's not like no one knows what is happening: we have more access to information than ever before, but what are we doing with this information? Jack shit. Nothing. If the People actually did something about Things, Things would be different.

I wish I could find more information about the bad things that happen in Canada or by Canadians. If you believe all media, you either think that the Canadian government is either good, or invisible. In a sense it is. But I have a feeling that Canadians know little more than Americans do about their respective governments.
