I don't have any stats, but I can tell you that business in Ottawa bars lagged slightly after the by-law was introduced, but went right back up again when people got used to the idea. There wasn't any wave of bars going out of business. And it's awesome being able to go out for an evening and not come home reeking and with a sore throat.

Montreal is very european in it's attitude towards smoking. In Spain, people smoke on BUSES. They smoke EVERYWHERE. In France, they smoke EVERYWHERE. Vancouver is good about the smoking thing. They made it a bylaw for a while because barstaff were getting ill, and the non smoking bartenders and waitresses wanted to do their job without being subjected to second hand smoke. They repealed it, but most places kept the rules in place, out of respect for their staff. So now, here 90% of the bars and clubs, you have to smoke outside or go to a smoking room. I like the idea of a smoking room. Seal them in and let them puff themselves to death in a cloud of their own shite.

the u.s. (or at least tampa; im not sure where the legislation came from) is changing that; smokers are pretty much getting ostracized everywhere now. which kind of sucks, because it is a biological compulsion and everything... but they did make that choice. just u.s. logic.

There was a little bit of an adjustment period here in K-W, and a few businesses totally collapsed without their smoking clientele (usually awful little doughnut shops that nobody misses anyway). As for the bar scene, I can't really comment as it's not really my thing. But there are bars here, and they haven't all shriveled up and died. KW's nightlife never was anything to write home about, and it doesn't seem to have changed at all. The only difference I've ever noticed is that I and several of my friends are now far more willing to go see live bands play in what clubs we have, now that we know we won't smell like a tobacco factory when we come home.
