Diablo

The first Diablo game was an instant hit and a classic. It deserves an honoured place in video game history because from it comes its successors, Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. These games tell stories to the patient adventurer. Some, such as the one I am going to tell you, may have been adapted from "real world" stories. Some even have morals and teachings.

At the beginning of the first game, you are an adventurer who comes upon the recent devastation of a town called Tristram. In these games are a number of NPCs, or non-playable characters. Your character talks to them to reveal plotlines, get new quests, buy armor, etc. In the first game, one of the NPCs appears to have no real purpose; he's the town drunk, Farnham. The witch Adria knows more of his story. But first, some background:

King Leoric was the ruler of Tristram and all surrounding towns and cities. He was the good king loved by everyone. When his son went missing, something terrible happened to him. It is detailed here.

Archibishop Lazarus led the townfolk into the depths in order to save the child. Farnham was among them, though he wasn't a drunk at that time. Farnham was the Archbishop's most faithful supporter, and was the first to volunteer for the cause. Lazarus was the Light made flesh as far as Farnham was concerned. When Lazarus betrayed him, he slowly went insane, and spent the next 20 years with a bottle in his mouth.

The moral of the story is: Never place too much faith in one person. Or, as the witch Adria puts it, "The higher you place your faith in one man, the farther it has to fall."

I have heeded these words carefully for the last years. For some reason, they struck a chord in me. I believe these words, at least to an extent. Recent discussions of Diablo II with Crystal made me think of the story of Farnham. Other than that, I have no reason to even bring up this story.
