Crossed Wires

Synaesthesia is in the news today. katima has discovered that she is a synaesthete. My roomate emailed me a cbc link at the same I emailed her link to him. Everyone's talking about it.

Imagine you woke up tomorrow and your eyes and ears switched wiring so that you could only see sounds and hear sights, but your brain wasn't used to it yet. If you didn't know what was going on, you'd probably go insane pretty fast, wouldn't you? OTOH, if you did know what was going on, how nuts would that be? (Why do I sound like I should be on Friends?)

You'd wake up, and all you could see is ambient sounds, if any. You could hear your room all aorund you, though, and you'd hear something different everytime you looked around. Your desk would talk to you. You know where the door is by hearing it in that direction. What sounds does an open door make? Imagine a train passing you. Can you imagine what that would look like by the sound? Describe that. Now THAT would be a good literary exercise.
