Potluck Dinner

Last Thursday, Krystal had a potluck dinner.

Every year she invites her closest friends for a little shindig. Saab, Suj, Deb and I were invited, as were about 20 other people. It was a great time. I forgot to take take pictures, but I brought pie, which was a hit. Saab brought chocolate fingers, Suj brought some Indian chicken and Deb brought a pasta salad. Fun was had by all. Pictures are here.

TOBL, SchmoBL

See? I was right about monogamy! It's a sham, and this guy who wants to plug his dating service proves it in this article.

Okay, I don't REALLY think it's a sham, just not something to force yourself into, that's all. And I do realize that I am plugging his site for him, but with the amount of traffic I get, it only counts as a microplug.

Seizure

One of my bank accounts has been seized. I owe another $1300. I have no job, and now no money.

Still, the summer is a good one. But this won't last the week, I fear.

Bob Hope is DEAD!

It has finally happened. Bob Hope is dead.

As I discussed on his milestone 1000th birthday, he lived for centuries entertaining and pandering to those in power, never being the power itself, just suckling at the teat of it. This was never so apparent as this past century. This century was huge.

The 20th century is when things went global, and no one went more global as an entertainer than Bob Hope. He did it all, from vaudeville to movies and then some. he has been on every continent. He received more than 2000 medals this century alone. In one week he did shows for Bushmen and pygmies in Africa, Queen Elizabeth in London, some Inuit on Ellesmere Island, Chilean fishermen in Santiago and the Indonesian military in East Timor.

In the age of companies and megacompanies he has been in shameless service to NBC for 61 years. 61 YEARS. Wait a minute. That's only about 6.1 years for the rest of us. If I had his lifespan, it would be like working at this place for 38 years.

Speaking of his lifespan, how did he get to live as long as he did? Well as it turns out, he inspired the book, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. Wilde discovered this while Hope was drunk at a pub in the 1880s. There was a picture of Hope in his youth made that aged while he did not. Not even Hope knows where it came from. It was Wilde that added the caveat that Dorian was never to look at the painting lest the spell be undone. It seems as though the picture is either destroyed, or has itself succumbed to the ravages of time.

Well, so long, Bob. Your time is finally up. Thanks for the memory.
